The company originated as part of Philip & Sons the ship builder and engineers whose yard was located on the shores of the River Dart, in Devon. Builders of many small and medium sized vessels, including two or the present Mersey Ferries, the company underwent something of a transformation from the  shipbuilding, repair and engineering business to that of marina and hotel operator. The Dartmouth & Kingswear Floating Bridge Company was one of several businesses spun off from the former parent including Dart Marina and Dart Marina Hotel.
