Weaver Packet Wincham on the Mersey

Photographs © Ian Collard 2009

Preserved "Weaver Packet" WINCHAM seen on the Mersey on April 01, 2009. She was built by Yarwoods of Northwich for ICI in 1948 to carry traffic on the west coast of England. She has been a feature of the Merseyside Maritime Museum collection since 1984 and is operated by the Wincham Preservation Society.

This little ship was scrapped at Bromborough less than three weeks after this photograph was taken a victim of local politics involving the National Museums & Galleries Merseyside and the Wincham Preservation Society. No one could find a few thousand pounds for some hull repairs and no attempt appeared to have been made to appeal to the public and ship enthusiasts locally or nationally. If repairs were not immediately available could space not have been made available to preserve her out of the water in the manner of the POMPON ROUGE at Rouen, France. [CLICK HERE]
