HMS Vandal - Lochranza

Photographs © John Luxton 2003

L1050762.JPG (113608 bytes) Standing beside the Caledonian MacBrayne terminal at Lochranza Pier, Isle of Arran is a memorial to the crew of His Majesty's Submarine VANDAL erected hy HM Submarines Old Comrades Association in 1997.

A photograph of a lost crewman placed on the top of the memorial makes it particularly poignant.

The boat was lost during trials off Lochranza on February  22, 1943.

Little did I realise that around the time that I photographed the memorial in August 2003 an expedition was exploring the wreck. A visit to the Deep Image web site is recommended. It features a detailed illustrated report in the sinking and examines possible reasons for the loss of HMS VANDAL.
