The Leaving of Liverpool

Looking for the Vanguard

Santiago Boland has written seeking information of his family's emigration from Ireland via Liverpool to Buenos Aires in 1849. I have suggested some sources of enquiry - however if anyone else can help please get in touch with Santiago [email and postal addresses] below. - John

I'm a descendant to Mr. John Boland, an Irishmen from Cº Tipperary, probably from Thurles, Munster, Ireland, who   embarked on board of  an English flag's ship, her name was Vanguard, at Liverpool harbour on May 8th 1849, to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Mr John Boland, my great grand father, and his brothers, probably arranged for a passage to Buenos Aires with Mr Michael Mc Donald, but we are not sure Trying to trace the way our ancestors came to Argentina we are looking for any record of the departure from Liverpool. We have been assisted by the Dpy President, Mr Wolahan, of the Foras Muiri na hEreann, of Dublin, but as the Buenos Aires arrivals' register recorded Dublin as the port of departure we misaddressed the research. I've just been informed of a memories of some Mr Robbin, passanger on board the Vanguard in this travel to Buenos Aires, and from such memories I've date a and point of embarkement and  the name of Mr Mc Donald.

About the Vanguard  we know she arrived at Buenos Aires' port on July 13th, and was in quarantine until 22nd. From previous research we suppose she was built  by M. Thompson  at Sunderland and launched 10/1840, surveyed Sunderland 11/1840 and then, soon after, sold to Clarke and Co and registered London where was surveyed 3/1841 for voyage to Berbice in Guayana (ex British Guiana), S. America. We don't  have her dimensions but comparing the dimensions of a dozen  other  snows built Sunderland about this period, we were informed that she would have  been about 85'x23'x16'. Our aim is to find out the place, the register, the Government Office, the museum we can trace the Vanguard, her description, even her plans if it
were possible.

About the travel to Buenos Aires we are looking for her crew, the name of the master, the roll of passengers, the way they live on board, everything that may make us aware of the way our ancestors arrived to our country. If you cannot help us in the task I'd pray you to feel free to give my e mail and postal address, or phone number to every body who you think may help us.

The Bolan Clan of  the Río de la Plata is preparing the second get together for 15th and 16th March 2003. The first one was held on July 1999. The Festiboland  (Bolandfeast) will be an occasion to share the information about the Vanguard with  the whole Clan. Thanks in advance. . Cordially. Lic Santiago Boland
